6 Tips to Finding the Perfect Photographer for You

1. Ask your friends and family

Maybe your sister sent you a beautiful family holiday card or your brother’s wedding photos were stunning. Do your friends have photos you like? Are these photos printed and are prints important to you? Ask them what they thought about their service? How responsive are they? Ask for the photographer’s contact information.

2. Would you like a local photographer?

Let’s say you don’t know anyone who has done a photoshoot lately. Don’t fret, all is not lost. Let’s open up your favorite search engine, Google. Did you know that you can search for “photographer near me” or even more specifically “quinceañera photographer near me”? These phrases will help you find photographers near your current location, which is nice if their locality is important to you.

3. Find a photographer that fits your style

Take the time to look through many photographer’s online portfolios to determine the style you like. Don’t worry too much about what it’s called (modernism, traditional, contemporary, etc). Just get an idea of what you like. Then determine what it is you like about it? Do you like the location (urban, country)? Is it the light (golden sunset)? Or is the feeling (smiling faces, togetherness)? Write down the names of the photographers and their contact info.

4. Read reviews but context is king

Reading their past reviews is important. I will be honest that it will be tricky trying to determine which website to read reviews from. Your best bet is to visit the individual photographer’s website and see which social media/photography marketing portal they link to. Some photographers use Weddingwire, some Yelp, and others use Facebook for photography reviews.

5. Determine Your Budget

Now that you have compiled your shortlist of photographers, it’s time to pair it down by price. It’s a reality that your favorite may not fit into your budget.

6. Make contact, talk IRL

IRL = In real life LOL. Now take your swing and make the call. Do do not rely solely on email, it’s very important that the personality of the photographer matches yours. Meet in person, if possible or at least have a phone call. Get a sense of their energy, chemistry is important!
